We're now well and truly into the final countdown for the Atlantic Rowing Challenge team and, as always, fundraising is the name of the game.
Already Lin and Rachel have spent some time at the London Boat Show and had a great time there, meeting friends and supporters and challenging themselves to keep on asking for help. Although it's incredibly hard work, they also had fun and came away feeling motivated with lots of plans to follow up on. {mosimage} The key points from the show were firming up a few offers, Satellite phones and thechnology from G-Comm, a new life raft from Avon Inflatables, commitment to attend the Brixham boating weekend in May with Plain Sailing (where they completed their Sea Survival course). They also had an exciting meeting with Dee Caffari, the first woman to sail solo round the world against the prevailing winds and currents, who is supporting the team and challenge. New sponsor, MBT 4 Fitness has agreed to supply specialist shoes for land training. These shoes help to strengthen core stability miscles and improve posture, recommended by Linda Stevenson and Jo Gibson who are the team physiotherapists. Teh intention being that hte rowers use every single opportunity available to help make sure hey are in the best possible shape when the race starts. The team managed to take some time out to catch up with fellow ocean rowers, Orlando and Ben from the Royal Marines. Both teams are using boats htat were built by Justin Adkin and came from the same mould, so notes were compared and a few ideas sharedt o help sort out things like painting and shipping. One of the highlights of the show was receiving a silver sponsors cheque from Ant Webb of BoatQuays, an enthusiastic supporter of this challenge. Ant has asked the team to appear at the opening of his new premises later in the year, wiht should be a fun event for them to attend with the boat. We also promised you an update of the teams progress with Alex McDonnell, a nutritionist who is helping to look after the team's nutritional requirements. Lin is waiting for her first consultation, while Rachel has been working on improving her blood sugar balance for a few weeks now. They both got caught out by Alex's ESP-like timing thought. The night before going to the boat show, they were about to tuck into a nice, but sneaky, takeaway meal, when Alex called to organise an appointment with Lin! With a rush of guilt (but not enough to stop them enjoying the meal) they owned up to the heinous crime and had to ask for nutritional forgiveness! But seriously, they have both committed to adjust their diets and follow Alex's suggestions, again to make sure they leave no storn unturned in their quest to row the Atlantic. That's all for now, but the next update shouldn't be too far away. Question of the month - What happens next with the boat? The team have now paid £16,000 otwards the cost of hte boat, the price of which was agreed at £25,000. As soon as the team complete the full payment, they will need to find a new home for the boat and move her there. They also need to take off all the stickers and top layers of paint, ready to respray the boat in her new colours. Plus a complete inventory of all the equipment that comes with the boat and what will or can be reused. Time will aslo need to be booked in to complete their mandatory on the water training and sea tirals, register their radio with Ofcom and spend time learning how to use and repair all the equipment on the boat - water maker, radio, autohelm, electrics, etc.
