What would you do in a day? Where would you spend it? A day can fly by without you even noticing. Would that day fly by just as fast if you were in a small boat, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in the blistering heat?

ImageWould that day fly by as fast if you were worried about the likelihoodof tropical storms? Would that day fly by as fast if you knew that ahead of you was another 70-100 days just like thisone? Maybe not, but this is exactly what Rachel Smith and Lin Griesel will be experiencing as they embark on the challenge of a lifetime.

Rachel and Lin will be taking part in the 2007 Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race. The journey will start on 2 December from La Gomera in the Canaries, taking almost 3,000 miles to finally reach Antigua. They are taking on this immense task to try and raise £100,000 for Breast Cancer Care. Every personal challenge that they overcome will make a difference and help raise hte much needed money so the good work of Breast Cancer Care can continue.

For a challenge such as this they have had to put themselves through some tough training, both physically and mentally. As part of their training, they will be carrying out a 24 hour row on the 5-6 April, to see how it will feel to have a full day on the boat. They will be eating and drinking as hey would expect to for a day during the race - that's sports drinks, high calorie dheydrated food and supplements like chocolate.

The plan is to row for 2 hours and rest for 2 hours, alternating for the 24 hours. Keeping a record of how htey feel at each stage, physically and mentally, will give Lin and Rachel a better idea of how their training is going. Other rowers claim that 90% of the race is a mental challenge, so this 24 hour row will test the women's motivation and endurance; only a glimmer of what they will be experiencing in the Atlantic.

There are many ways for you to show your support for this commendable challenge. To find out how to contribute visit the website at www.atlanticrowingchallenge.co.uk.
