Welcome to the very first of the team updates from Lin & Rachel, the Atlantic Rowing Challenge, supporting Breast Cancer Care. As I write this it's a cold and frosty morning and I'm sitting on a train to London, wondering if, in 2 years time, I'll be wishing I actually was here instead of bobbing aroud in the Atlantic Ocean.
And our news? We've just ahad sponsorship confirmed from Avon Inflatables who will supply a life raft. Now the conversation went along the lines of 'thanks Avon, and we hope we'll be able to bring it back to you unused'. To which their response was 'we hope so too, but in not, can you get some photo's?' Not maybe top of our priority list if we have to abandon ship, but note to selves... add throwaway waterproof camera to emergency grab bag!! We're sure you've all heard the news of several capsizes (and rescues!) in this year's race, which have been steadily coming through the media over the past couple of weeks and Yes, we're both just a teensy bit scared! But seriously, we think the best way to handle any fears is to learn from others experiences. In most cases when boats haven't self-righted, it's been because the hatch was open - big lesson there then! We'll also make sure we're clipped onto the boat all the time and if we must drink our ballast, we'll replace it with seawater straight away! Our fundraising is going really well and we're finding support from all sorts of sources that we'd never imagined. Our recent trip to the London Boat Show has proven very fruitful, with a number of sponsors coming on board - Joules Clothing for kit supplies, Garmin for the loan of handheld GPS units and the loan of an Iridium phone from G Comm. Now if only we can find a phone bill sponsor! We firmly believe the best plan is to tell everyone we meet and get them to pass it on! We're raised enough to pay the first couple of entry fee instalments, which has proven very useful. Cracknell & Fogle have generate so much interest that entries for the next race have been halted for a while. The next step is targeting big corporates and trying to get in some larger amounts and commitment to buy items. We're also planning our roadshow and getting some help putting a dislay together from t3 and C3 Imaging (unrelated!). Please also pass on details of our website www.atlanticrowingchallenge.co.uk to everyone you know. So ti's all go and a complete mixture of terribly scary and incredibly exciting all at the same time. Let us know if you have any questions and thanks for your support. Question of the Month - Why are you doing this and are you completely mad? Yes to the mad bit! Fundamentally we both have active lifestyles and believe there's more out there than the old 9 to 5. We've both always pushed ourselves to the limit to achieve more - that's Capricorn's for you! We're oin it because we've wanted to take part in a charity event for some time. We've both lost loved ones to breast cancer, so joining up with Breast Cancer Care was a natural choice. In 2001, our friend Debra Searle (formerly Debra Veal) rowed the Atlantic on her own and that really pleanted the seed of our idea. |
