Rowing the Atlantic, what sort of an idea is that? Print E-mail

{mosimage}Oops, that’s done it, we’re going to row an ocean!

Well I’m sitting with the TV on and an OK (ish) red wine close at hand, having just checked out the Woodvale Race web site for about the tenth time today. Rowgirls are tracking Cracknell/Fogle just as we expected, the saucy lot! Roz Savage is making good progress and Bobby Prentice (and partner) are steadily rowing in the middle of the pack. Unfortunately Stephane has had to retire already, bringing home the hard reality of what we’re undertaking.

You see, this year’s Atlantic rowing race has just left La Gomera and it’s somehow made it all more real. There are people we know out there, writing diary entries and making their way across the same ocean that we’ll be crossing in 2 years time. Scared? Yup. Excited? Yup again!

Apart from a moment of insanity a couple of weeks ago (sitting in the bath and being consumed by a distinct ‘what have I done?’ feeling), things have been going well.

We’ve done our fundraising day at Twickenham (courtesy of the RFU – thanks guys!) and I have to say that it was a really fun day. I was ill and Lin, who’s just moved home and workplace, had had the devils own job in sourcing fleeces (thanks to Dave Tennison for saving our bacon!) and helpers for the day. So we weren’t expecting it, but it was really good fun and made us feel very positive about what we’re doing and why.

It was also bitterly cold and sleeting but our team of collectors was in high spirits and the response was fantastic. In total we raised over £2,000 towards the Challenge. Okay, we had to sell our hats, occasional dances, children (only joking!) and the odd grope but as adventurer Jock Wishart told us… ‘Sell your assets!’ It’s proving to be good advice!

We’re continuing to get really good press coverage and coming up with fundraising ideas, but we have a huge target. If you’d like to help, tell everyone you know about the Challenge and ask if they’d like to do some fundraising to help or join our Land Crew. We’ve got loads of ideas, so feel free to ask us how you could make a difference.

So what’s next?

Well, in the New Year we’ll be mailing out to some major corporates on the off chance that we might hit pay dirt and find a major sponsor! We’re continuing discussions with potential sponsors of all sizes, working with a variety of media contacts and will be starting our monthly updates, just for supporters and Land Crew members.

For now, check out www.atlanticrowingrace.co.uk to see exactly what we’re intending to do and tell everyone about it.

Rachel & Lin.
