Since our nice night of sleep we’ve had almost totally glorious weather. Really hot sunshine during the day, flat calm seas and during the night, the moon is so bright, it’s lighting the way for us and again the seas are flat calm. This bodes really well for Lin trying to row with one foot out of the shoes and the other in the wrong shoe while her foot mends itself as the boat is sitting really steady and stops her falling off the seat.
However, this wonderful weather has a drawback, it has slowed our progress a bit as the wind and waves are not pushing us so much. We’re happy to go with this for a while but we really want to get to Antigua now and it won’t be long before we start to long for the faster seas and stronger wind. I said almost totally glorious weather because last night Rachel got caught in a bit of a downpour and ended up deciding to come in early to avoid the next one on the way. So we both had a couple of hours sheltered in our cabin while the rain clouds moved on out. Yesterday Rachel went out the stern hatch to change our Spanish Courtesy flag for the Antiguan flag and to lengthen our second steering line. The latter being because the steering line we’re currently using is fraying as it’s been rubbing against the rubber scupper cover. It’s ok for now but we wanted to be sure we have a back up ready just in case it breaks completely. Its pure chance that we have a second line set up as this is for the Autohelm (electronic steering device) the giveaway as to why we haven’t used it being the word ‘electronic’! We set it up in case we were able to use it but now it’s a relief as we have a back up line in place. Today is probably the hottest we’ve experienced out here so far and if we hadn’t have treated ourselves to a full wash and hair wash yesterday we’d be very tempted to go for a swim. Our only wildlife in the past week or so was a load of fish swimming around the boat this morning and a couple of kamikaze flying fish yesterday. We would both like to say hi and welcome to the Horse and Hound Forum members who have been following our progress thanks to Lin’s Mum telling them all about our challenge. It’s great to have a following in the equestrian world as it was this common interest that got Rachel and I talking to each other almost 14 years ago now. Thank you so much for your support and we hope you’re enjoying reading all about the challenge. Replies to messages:- Jo – the stats comparing us to 2005 Making Waves and against the other two all female pairs boats in this race are really useful and weekly updates would be great. Also great to know you’re pretty much ready to book everything now, can’t wait to see you all in Antigua. May be worth getting my Dad’s and Liam’s passport details in advance to ease the process too – I’ll speak to them over the next week to get that sorted for you. Also, did you check my post last time you went to my house? I’m expecting a PSP game for Liam – the neighbour may have taken it in though. Katriona – thank you so much for offering to raise money to help us reach our target – let us know how you get on. Paul – hope your battered body recovers soon from your kamikaze snowboarding escapades and hope you’ve managed to get your socks on now. We wish we’d been there to see it!!!! Love & hugs, Lin & Rachel. |
