Since our last blog we’ve been making great headway, but it hasn’t all been straightforward. We’re still experiencing big seas, but with a following (ish) wind, we’re keeping our sights set on Antigua and figuring out how to make a finish line that’s just a n/mile long! But we’re also seeing the degrees West move along at a pleasing rate – normally the second half of the race distance is completed in a shorter time than the first half. We’re certainly hoping for that as we can’t wait to see our families and partners again soon.
Meanwhile, Neptune and his pals have worked out that the breaking waves, while annoying, are just getting us wet – or more wet. So they’ve now cooked up another plan. A couple of nights ago, Rachel had just come out on deck to cook tea while Lin was steering. A large black cloud loomed and the heavens opened. We both just sat there dripping wet and laughed. How British – stiff upper lip and get on with the cooking! We sat there eating our meal with water plopping off our noses into the food bags! But the cloud has continued and last night we both got seriously rained on several times over. It’s not pleasant, but marginally better than being dumped on by the big waves – though they are still around to sneak up too! {mosimage}More worrying is that Lin’s sore foot took a turn for the worse. Two nights ago the wind was incredibly strong and a lot of steering was needed. Her left foot has been bad for a while and this excess steering made it swell up painfully. Yesterday she spoke to the fleet Doctor and is now taking antibiotics in case it is an infection, along with anti-inflammatory medicine. True to form though she’s still out there, steering with her right foot in the left shoe. This team is made of tough stuff! We also wanted to remind you all about why we’re out here – especially now the excesses of Christmas should be a distant memory. We’re aiming to raise one hundred thousand pounds for Breast Cancer Care. Every year in the UK alone, over 44,000 women and 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. That means that every 13 minutes, someone receives that devastating news. They are the only charity in the UK to offer specialist support to those with breast cancer or worried about it, and their families and friends. We appreciate that many of you have already supported our challenge by making a donation, but we also know that there are lots of you out there who might not be as familiar with this part of our challenge. So if you feel inspired, go to our justgiving site at www.justgiving.com/atlanticrowing - or follow the links from our website. Don’t worry if you’re not in the UK either – you can donate on the site using credit cards, but in pounds sterling. Providing you know the rough exchange rate, you should have no problems donating from abroad! Anyway that’s all for now from the little pink rowing boat, with a cabin festooned with drying kit! We’re off to play water sports with Neptune and his buddies for another night and pray for some sunshine and calmer water soon. Love & hugs, Rachel and Lin. |
