These Things Are Sent To Try Us Print E-mail

You’ll all be pleased to hear that we’re still enjoying life onboard and yesterday we found a stowaway crab who must have jumped aboard in La Gomera!

Well we think tiny Cyril the crab jumped ship last night when we discovered his hiding place. On a more serious note, we’re having difficulties with our power supplies and are having to have a go at being electricians. This can be quite amusing as well as very frustrating as neither of us know the first thing about electronics.
We’ve now spent two days with no power at all as both batteries died and the solar panels do not appear to be charging them back up. We’re in constant contact with Woodvale Duty Officer and our own advisors. Albeit a pain in the backside, there is no risk to our safety as we are navigating using a compass and a handheld GPS, we have the means to charge handheld items by a separate rollout solar panel and we’ll be working on our water maker today so that we can manually operate it. For communications, we have our satellite phone, handheld VHF radio and of course our trusty computer. Thankfully we packed plenty of batteries for those items that are non rechargeable. We’re more disappointed about this situation than anything as everything else is going so well.

We’ve been making great progress with our daily rowing and have a good routine working. We both feel very fit and healthy, a bit tired from the night rowing as we have to concentrate so hard but otherwise couldn’t be better.
We’ll keep you all updated on our progress and if we have a sudden breakthrough on the electrical front but please be assured there is nothing to worry about. These things are sent to try us but whoever sent them didn’t realize how determined we are (stubborn as some might call us).

Please keep the messages coming, we love reading them out every day and are writing them in our book.

Love and hugs Lin & Rachel
