Day 6 has been another tough day of rowing in heavy conditions, much different to two days ago when we think we managed 114 miles in total!
At the moment, we’re trying to hold a SW course, but a really strong easterly is blowing to push us West too soon. This wind kicks up some massive waves, but crosses the current which is also moving SW. The result is a huge sea that’s very confused and tossing us around all over the place. Lots of the boats are having trouble steering and we tried a number of things yesterday to try to get moving again. Barbara Ivy likes to go broadside on to the wind, but even trailing a drogue from the back, or offset to one side doesn’t seem to help. So we did what we knew best and sat on the sea anchor again last night. Some boats find that just drifting and steering keeps them straight, but again, that didn’t seem to work for us. Today has been better though and we’ve followed the current at an angle to most of the waves, but have made some progress in the right direction. We had a good rest last night and woke up to find support yacht Sara and her crew making their way to us to say hello. It was great to catch up with them and hear a bit more about the rest of the fleet. We hope Jaydubyoo (our buddies Joe and Andrew) and Atlantic Jack are both successful in fixing their rudders.
It had been a bit sunnier today which has helped recharge the batteries – a very good sign as we were starting to worry a little. For fans of Bertie the blister (we know you’re out there!), he’s hanging in there today and showing no sign of disappearing yet. It’s also now been 6 days since either of us has had a bath or shower, or washed our hair! A record length of time for both of us. Strangely, it doesn’t seem to hum too much yet – is this a good sign? Apart from greasy hair and salty skin, we’re both keeping well and enjoying life out on the ocean. Wildlife watch – not much since the dolphins, but one small black or dark brown bird a bit like a swallow, with a yellow stripe on his wings. And a larger gull like bird with a brown speckled back and brown beak. More soon, Rachel & Lin. Position:N 26.19.38.4W 018.52.05.1 |
